Travel mode
Temporarily remove all but your travel-safe vaults from your devices when crossing borders, and restore everything with a 2FA code when you arrive.
Travel Mode protects your data when crossing borders or passing device inspections. While it's on, vaults not marked safe for travel are removed from your devices — someone inspecting your phone or laptop sees only the vaults you chose to keep.
Premium Travel Mode is available on Premium plans and above, and requires two-factor authentication to be set up.
Choose your safe vaults#
Mark each vault you want to keep while travelling:
- Open the vault's Settings.
- Turn on Safe for travel — "Keep this vault on your devices when Travel Mode is enabled."
- Repeat for each vault you'll need on the trip. Everything else will be hidden.
The Configure Safe Vaults card on the Travel Mode page lists what's currently marked. At least one vault must be safe before you can enable Travel Mode.
Keep a small vault with just your itinerary, travel cards, and the logins you'll actually need. Mark only that one safe — the less that travels, the better.
Enable Travel Mode#
- Open Travel Mode in the My security sidebar (My security on some plans).
- Flip the toggle. The status changes to Travel Mode is ON.
- Check the badges — Safe Vaults and Hidden Vaults counts — to confirm what stays and what goes.
While enabled, only safe vaults are synced to your devices; the status card shows when Travel Mode was activated.
Hide one more vault while it's on#
Changed your mind at the airport? While Travel Mode is on, each vault in the Configure Safe Vaults card has a Hide button. It removes that vault from your devices immediately and needs no code, because hiding only ever shows less. You can't hide the last safe vault.
The page never lists the vaults that are already hidden, and there is no per-vault way to show one again — that would put their names on screen at exactly the moment you're keeping them off it. To bring a hidden vault back, turn Travel Mode off (it needs your authenticator code), or turn it off here and mark the vault safe in its Settings. While the mode is on, a vault's Safe for travel switch in Settings is refused for the same reason.
Disable Travel Mode#
Turning Travel Mode off requires a 6-digit code from your authenticator app — flip the toggle, enter the code in the Disable Travel Mode dialog, and choose Verify & Disable. Your hidden vaults return to all your devices.
The code requirement means someone holding your unlocked device at a checkpoint can't simply switch Travel Mode off to reveal your hidden vaults — they'd also need your authenticator. Nothing on the device indicates what's hidden.
Turn Travel Mode on while you still have a trusted connection, and verify the hidden-vault count. Enabling it at the border is too late.
