Trash & recovery
Deleted vaults and items go to the Trash first — restore them, delete them forever, or empty the trash in one action.
Deleting a vault or an item is a soft delete: it disappears from your lists but moves to the Trash, where it waits until you restore it or remove it permanently. Nothing is gone for good until you say so.
What goes to the trash#
- Vaults — deleting a vault trashes it with its contents.
- Items — deleting an item from any vault trashes the item.
Notes, file attachments, and item history are deleted permanently and immediately when you confirm their delete dialogs — they don't pass through the trash. Folders aren't trashed either; deleting a folder just re-parents its contents.
Browse the trash#
Trash needs an unlocked vault, because listing and restoring deleted vaults and items both sit behind the vault session. If yours has expired, unlock first.
Open Trash. The header reads Deleted Items with a line such as "3 items waiting to be permanently removed". Below it are tabs for All, Vaults, and Items. You can search deleted entries and filter items by type. Each row shows the title, type, and when it was deleted — contents stay encrypted and aren't viewable from the trash; restore first to open something.
You can also see a vault's own deleted items in place: in the item list, set the status filter to Deleted (see Search).
Restore#
- Find the vault or item in the Trash.
- Click Restore.
- It returns to where it lived before — items go back to their original vault.
Delete permanently#
- Click Delete on a trashed entry.
- Confirm in the Permanently Delete dialog by choosing Delete Forever.
To clear everything at once, use Empty Trash in the header and confirm — it permanently deletes every trashed vault and item.
Permanent deletion cannot be reversed. There is no server-side copy to recover from — the encrypted data is removed. Export a backup first if you're unsure (Import & export).
Shared vaults#
Restores and permanent deletes on shared content are authorized by the server according to your access level in the vault — see Access levels & permissions. Deletions are recorded in the audit log.
