My family
What a family member sees under Account — your membership, vault invitations to accept, what has been shared with you, exactly what the organizer can see, and how to leave the family.
If someone invited you to their family plan, Account → My Family is your side of it. It answers the questions a member most wants answered: what does this membership mean for my account, what has been shared with me, and what can the organizer see?
The family organizer manages the family from a different place — Family overview. This page is for everyone else.
Joining the family#
You arrive here after accepting an invitation from the email. The guided page that comes before it — signing in or creating your account, confirming the join, and what happens if a plan of your own is in the way — is described in Joining a family.
If you are not in a family, the page says You're not in a family and explains that an invitation arrives by email and brings you straight here.
Your membership#
The Your membership card shows who organizes the family (Organized by), Member since, Your role ("Family member") and People on the plan ("3 of 6"), and lists everyone under Also in this family.
Your seat is paid for by the organizer, so you have no card or invoice to manage. What your plan covers is on Billing → Your plan.
Waiting for you#
When the organizer shares a vault with you, it does not appear in your vaults until you accept it. A Waiting for you card lists each pending vault with who it is from, the access level and a "respond by" date, plus any message they wrote. Choose Accept to add the vault to your own vaults, or Decline.
Shared with you#
Shared with you lists the vaults you can open through the family, with the date they were shared, a Family vault tag where it applies, an end date if access expires, and your access level. If nothing has been shared yet, the card says your organizer can share a vault from their family settings.
What your organizer can see#
Being on someone's family plan does not give them access to your things. The What your organizer can see card spells out both sides.
They can never see
- Your passwords, notes or files — your vaults are encrypted with keys only you hold
- The names of your items, or the sites they belong to
- What you do in the app, or when
They can see
- Your email address and when you joined
- Whether your account has been used recently — as a date, not a time
- What they've shared with you, and what level of access you have
- How many of your passwords are weak, reused, aging or found in a breach — counts only, never which ones
The last item exists so the person organizing your family can help the household stay safe. It is a set of numbers, produced on your own device — nobody, including us, can turn it back into your passwords. The organizer's view is the Family Security Center.
Leave this family#
Leave this family is at the bottom of the page; the button reads Leave followed by the family's name. It opens a three-step dialog, so nothing happens by accident.
- What changes. You lose access to the shared family vault (or anything shared with you), your seat on the family plan, and the family's password rules for your generator. You keep every one of your own vaults and items, your account, password and keys, and the ability to export. Nothing of yours is deleted.
- What happens to your account. For the next 14 days your account is read-only — you can open and export everything but not change it. After that it is locked until you choose a plan; your data stays where it is and subscribing unlocks it again. Your account moves to Premium terms, the same allowances your family seat gave you, so every vault you made stays open — you do not go back to a free account. See plans first opens the plan selector without leaving.
- Confirm. You cannot rejoin on your own: the organizer would have to invite you again, and a new invitation starts a new seat rather than restoring this one. Type the family's name to enable Leave the family.
When it is done, the dialog tells you the date your read-only window ends and offers Choose a plan or Back to my vaults. Choosing a plan before that date keeps full access.
After you leave, the organizer's shared vault has its key changed so the copy on your device stops working. You do not have to do anything.
