Notes (rich text)

The per-vault Notes workspace — a rich-text editor with notebooks, code blocks, tables, and checklists, encrypted end-to-end.

Every vault includes a Notes workspace — a full rich-text editor for anything that doesn't fit a structured item: runbooks, recovery instructions, meeting notes, snippets. Like items, a note's title, content, and notebook names are encrypted on your device with the vault's key before they're stored; the server only ever sees opaque ciphertext.

Create a note#

  1. Open a vault and go to its Notes section.
  2. Click Create Note (or the + in the sidebar) — at the top level or inside a notebook.
  3. Start typing. The title is taken from the first line until you set one, and you can give the note an emoji icon.

Notes save themselves: edits autosave about 1.5 seconds after you stop typing, with an Unsaved / Saving... / Saved indicator in the toolbar. ⌘S / Ctrl+S saves immediately.

What the editor supports#

Category Tools
Text Bold, italic, strikethrough, inline code
Structure Headings (H1–H3), blockquotes, horizontal rules, text alignment
Lists Bullet, numbered, and task checklists (nestable)
Code Syntax-highlighted code blocks with language selection
Tables Resizable tables up to 20×20 — add/remove rows and columns from the table menu
Links Pasted links are preserved as clickable links

Type / in the editor for quick commands. Images can't be embedded in notes — attach files to a vault item instead (Files & attachments).

Organize with notebooks#

The sidebar groups notes into Notebooks, which can be nested. Create, rename, move, and delete notebooks from their menus; notes without a notebook appear under Uncategorized. Deleting a notebook (Delete Notebook?) moves its notes to Uncategorized — it never deletes them.

Other note actions:

  • Duplicate — copies a note (the encrypted content is copied as-is, so this works even without unlocking).
  • Delete Note — moves the note to the vault's Trash after confirmation. Open Trash at the foot of the sidebar to search deleted notes, restore them, or delete them forever (Delete forever asks for confirmation and cannot be undone).
  • Create a task — turn a note into a task in Task Workflows.

Access and sharing#

Notes belong to their vault, so access follows vault access: anyone the vault is shared with can open its notes after unlocking. There is no separate per-note sharing.

Locked vault, locked notes

If the vault is locked, note titles and content can't be decrypted — unlock the vault to read or edit.
